Reviewers saw a darker, more ambitious sequel that deepens the conflict between apes and surviving humans. The performance-capture work and the emotional stakes earned strong notes, as did the way both sides are given believable motives. Minor complaints were about underwritten human characters and a few convenient turns late in the story.
