Critics found it a tender, thoughtful love story that uses a near-future setting to look at loneliness and modern connection. Joaquin Phoenix's performance and Jonze's writing drew the most praise. Reservations were minor, mostly that its mood is slow and melancholy and its vision of the future is gentle.
